Is it a swarm?

How to tell a swarm from a hive

Bee swarm removal is the quickest bee job there is, but only while the swarm is still hanging. Our swarm removal team treats every call as urgent, so bee swarm removal Melbourne wide is usually same day bee removal where we have a slot. If a swarm is over a door or someone at home is allergic, that is emergency bee removal and we put you first.

  • A cluster hanging on a branch or fenceA swarm the size of a football, often out in the open and sitting still for hours.
  • A few bees checking walls and eavesScouts going in and out of a gap near the swarm means they are choosing a home.
  • It turned up suddenlySwarms arrive in spring and early summer, often in the middle of a warm day.
  • Bees going into the house or roofIf the cluster has moved into a gap, it is becoming a hive and the job changes.
  • A loud hum and bees in the airA swarm on the move fills the air before it settles. Keep people and pets inside.

Why it should not wait

A swarm today is a hive next week

A swarm is the smallest bee job there is, but only while it is still hanging.

It moves in within hours to days

Scouts pick a wall cavity, a roof or a chimney, and the whole swarm moves in behind them.

Then the comb goes up

Once inside, a colony builds wax comb within days. Same bees, several times the work.

Stings near doors and paths

A swarm over a door, a driveway or a school gate is where people get stung. Tell us and we come first.

Spraying it yourself scatters it

A half sprayed swarm breaks up, and the bees that are left can settle somewhere harder to reach.

How it works

What does bee swarm removal cost?

Every bee job is different, so we price yours on the phone before we book. This is what moves the price, so you know what to expect before you call.

Where it is hangingA low branch or a fence is quicker than a swarm on a second storey eave.
How highGround level, a ladder job, or a roof line on a double storey home.
Has it moved in yetA swarm in the open is the smallest bee job. Once it is inside a wall it becomes a hive removal.
Sealing any gapIf scouts have found a gap, it is sealed on the same visit and priced before we start.

A can of spray or proper removal?

Why a can of spray is not swarm removal

Hardware store bee spray is the first thing most people try. It kills the bees it touches, but the colony, the comb and the honey stay where they are.

Bees or wasps?

Not sure if it is bees or wasps?

They are different jobs, so it helps to know. Honey bees are fuzzy and golden brown and build wax comb. European wasps are smooth, bright yellow and black, and build a grey paper nest. We remove both.

Questions

Bee swarm removal questions

How much does bee swarm removal cost?

A swarm in the open is the smallest bee job we do. The price depends on where it is hanging and how high. We give you the price on the phone before we book, with no obligation. Book it for today and 10% comes off the job.

Is a bee swarm dangerous?

A swarm is usually calm, because it has no brood or honey to defend yet. Keep people and pets away and leave it alone. The bigger problem is the swarm moving into your wall or roof next.

Is there bee swarm removal near me?

We are based in Bulleen and cover the whole metro area, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula, 7 days a week. Give us your suburb and we tell you how soon we can be there.

Do you do bee swarm collection?

We treat and remove swarms. We do not collect them live, so if you were looking for a bee catcher to keep the bees alive, a local beekeeping club is the right call and we will tell you so.

Can you come today?

Most days, yes. Swarms are treated as urgent, and if you call in the morning there is a good chance we can be there that afternoon. If we cannot make it today we tell you on the call and give you the earliest time.

Why can I not just seal the hole?

Because the colony dies inside and the honey melts. It runs down the cavity, stains the plaster, smells, and draws ants and the next swarm. The comb has to come out, and that is the part we do.

Is the treatment safe for my kids and pets?

We ask who is at home before we treat, apply products according to the label, and tell you if anyone should keep away from an area for a while. You get a written record of what was used.

What should I do until you arrive?

Keep children and pets away, leave the bees alone, and do not spray or block the entrance. A disturbed colony is harder and slower to treat.

Do you do commercial bee control?

Yes. Schools, childcare centres, cafes, warehouses and strata common property. Tell us about the site on the call and we plan the job around it.
