What people ask when the smell has already started.

How long will the smell last if I just wait?
Longer than you want. A rat or a mouse is usually worst at about days three to ten and then fades over two to four weeks. A possum is much worse and can take two months or more, and in a hot week it will be unbearable. Waiting also leaves you with the blowflies, the maggots, the beetles and the staining, so the smell is only the part you notice first.
Can you actually find it?
Usually, yes. Flies gather at the closest point, staining shows on the ceiling, and the smell is strongest directly beneath. We work the roof void, the subfloor, the wall cavities, under decking and around the hot water service and air conditioning ducts. Occasionally the only access is through a small section of plaster, and if that is the case we tell you before we cut anything.
What if it is inside a wall?
That is the awkward one. Sometimes it can be reached from above or below without opening anything. Sometimes a small access hole is the only way, and it is still far better than living with it for two months. We cut the smallest hole that works, in the least visible spot we can, and we tell you exactly what we are proposing before we start.
Do you treat the smell as well?
Yes, and this is what separates a proper job from a cheap one. Removing the carcass is half of it. The residue soaked into insulation, plaster or timber is what keeps the smell going, so the area gets treated, the soiled insulation comes out where it needs to, and we deal with the blowflies and the beetles that came with it. Air freshener over the top is not a treatment.
Why are there suddenly hundreds of flies inside?
That is the usual first sign. Blowflies find a carcass within hours, breed on it, and the next generation comes out through the ceiling vents and the light fittings into your living room. A sudden wave of large slow flies inside, with no rubbish or food source to explain it, almost always means something has died in the roof or a wall.
Is it a health risk?
The carcass itself is mostly an odour and a fly problem, but what came off it is not nothing. Bird and rodent mites leave the body looking for a new host once it cools, and that is often when people start getting unexplained bites. We treat for that as part of the job rather than treating it as a separate call.
How fast can you come?

Can you stop it happening again?
That is the real fix. Something died in your roof because something was living in your roof.
