Two species matter here. The roof rat, also called the black rat, is the slim one with the long tail and big ears that climbs, and it is the one in almost every Melbourne roof complaint. The Norway rat is the heavier brown one that burrows, lives low, and turns up in subfloors, drains, compost and chicken runs.

How do I know if it is rats or mice?
Droppings are the quickest tell. Mouse droppings are about the size of a grain of rice with pointed ends, rat droppings are closer to a raisin. Noise helps too: mice make a light scurrying you hear in the wall cavity, rats are heavier and you tend to hear them moving across the ceiling in the roof void. Send us a photo of the droppings when you enquire and we will tell you which one you have.
How long does it take to get rid of them?
Most homes are quiet within one to two weeks of the first visit, and a straightforward mouse job is often faster than that. Rats are more cautious around anything new in their environment, so the first few days can look like nothing is happening while they get used to the stations. That is normal and it is not the treatment failing.
Is the bait safe around my pets and kids?
Bait goes in locked tamper resistant stations, secured in place, and positioned where a rodent runs and a child or a dog does not: roof void, subfloor, behind appliances, along fence lines. We ask about your household before we plan the placement. Where there are small children, working dogs or chickens we will often use trapping and proofing instead and skip the bait altogether. Tell us what you have at home and we build the job around it.
Will a poisoned rat die in my wall and smell?
It can happen, and any operator who tells you it never does is not being straight with you. It is one of the reasons we lean on trapping and proofing rather than bait alone inside a living area. If something does die somewhere inaccessible we come back and deal with it, and we treat the odour and the flies rather than leaving you to it. See dead animal removal for what that involves.
Why do they keep coming back?
Because the hole is still there. Baiting without proofing is a subscription, not a solution: you clear the current population and the next one walks in through the same gap six weeks later. A mouse fits through a gap the width of a pencil and a rat through one the size of a fifty cent piece. Weep holes, roof to gutter gaps, subfloor vents, pipe penetrations, garage door seals and eave gaps are where we spend the time.
Do you do commercial rodent work?
Yes. Food premises, warehouses, strata common property and offices, on a scheduled program with mapped bait stations, monitoring records and a treatment report for every visit. That documentation is what your auditor asks for, and it is the difference between a short conversation and a real problem at inspection time.

What should I do before you arrive?
Not much, and please do not start putting down supermarket bait, because a half poisoned population learns to avoid stations and makes the professional job harder. Clear access to the roof manhole and the subfloor hatch if you can, pick up any pet food left out overnight, and make a note of where you have heard them and at what time.
