The signs of rats in a Melbourne home
Rat removal Melbourne homes need is a three part job: knock them down, find every way in, close it. Our rat control Melbourne service covers the roof rat above the ceiling and the Norway rat under the floor, and rats in roof removal is the call we get most. Whether you searched rat removal, rat control, rat exterminator or rat catcher Melbourne, it is the same job, and rat pest control only lasts if the gap is sealed. If these sound familiar, it is time for a rat exterminator Melbourne locals trust, and pest control Melbourne rats cannot outwait.
What does rat removal cost?
Rodent control in Melbourne starts from $169, with a 6 month guarantee in writing. That covers checking the roof void and subfloor and the treatment itself. A bigger property, a heavy infestation or a lot of entry points to seal can cost more, and if yours does you hear the price on the phone before anything is booked.
Your price, before we book
Most jobs are on the starting price. If yours needs more, you hear it on the phone before anything is booked.

- Locked tamper resistant stations, placed where a rodent runs and a child cannot
- Trapping used where bait is not the right answer for the household
- Entry points found, listed and sealed rather than just noted
- Droppings and nesting material cleared out of the roof void
- A written record of what we did and the products we used
- A 6 month guarantee in writing, with a free return visit inside it
- 10% off when we come the same day
- Told before you book if it needs two visits

Entry points are found, listed and sealed, and you get a 6 month guarantee in writing, with a written record of the products used.
A rodent problem does not stay small
This is what we see when rats and mice are left, or only half treated.
Mice breed fast
A few mice do not stay a few. They breed fast and nibble constantly, so the job needs enough points of contact, not one station.
The same gap lets the next lot in
Baiting without proofing is a subscription. Clear the current population and the next one walks in through the same gap six weeks later.
Supermarket bait makes it harder
A half poisoned population learns to avoid stations, and that makes the professional job harder.
A dead rodent in the wall
A dead rodent in a wall cavity or roof void is a smell that gets worse for about a week, then slowly fades over a month.
Rat control and rat removal
Two species matter here. The roof rat, also called the black rat, is the slim one with the long tail and big ears that climbs, and it is the one in almost every Melbourne roof complaint. The Norway rat is the heavier brown one that burrows, lives low, and turns up in subfloors, drains, compost and chicken runs.
Roof rats climb, so we look up
Overhanging branches, the gap where the roof meets the gutter, downpipes, vines and the eave line. Cutting back one branch often does more than a month of baiting, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Norway rats burrow, so we look down
Subfloor vents, burrow holes along a fence line or shed slab, drains and compost bays. Different animal, different habits, and a treatment aimed at the wrong one of the two mostly wastes your money.
They are neophobic, so we are patient
Rats avoid anything new for the first few nights. Stations that get moved around every second day never get taken. We place properly and leave them to settle, which is why the first week can look quiet.
Why supermarket bait is not rat removal
Supermarket bait is the first thing most people try. It can knock a few down, but a half poisoned population learns to avoid stations, and the gap they use stays open.

Know which one you have
The roof rat, also called the black rat, is the slim one with the long tail and big ears that climbs. The Norway rat is the heavier brown one that burrows and lives low. The house mouse gets through a gap about the width of a pencil. Each one needs a different job.
Not sure which? Send us a photo of the droppings when you enquire and we will tell you which one you have.
If they come back, so do we
Every job comes with a 6 month guarantee in writing. If rodent activity comes back inside it, we come back and re treat at no cost to you.

Rat removal questions
How much does rat removal cost?
Rodent control starts from $169, with a 6 month guarantee in writing. That covers checking the roof void and subfloor and the treatment itself. A bigger property, a heavy infestation or a lot of entry points to seal can cost more, and you always hear the price on the phone before we book. Book it for today and 10% comes off.
How do I know if it is rats or mice?
Droppings are the quickest tell. Mouse droppings are about the size of a grain of rice with pointed ends, rat droppings are closer to a raisin. Noise helps too: mice make a light scurrying you hear in the wall cavity, rats are heavier and you tend to hear them moving across the ceiling in the roof void. Send us a photo of the droppings when you enquire and we will tell you which one you have.
How long does it take to get rid of them?
Most homes are quiet within one to two weeks of the first visit, and a straightforward mouse job is often faster than that. Rats are more cautious around anything new in their environment, so the first few days can look like nothing is happening while they get used to the stations. That is normal and it is not the treatment failing.
Is the bait safe around my pets and kids?
Bait goes in locked tamper resistant stations, secured in place, and positioned where a rodent runs and a child or a dog does not: roof void, subfloor, behind appliances, along fence lines. We ask about your household before we plan the placement. Where there are small children, working dogs or chickens we will often use trapping and proofing instead and skip the bait altogether. Tell us what you have at home and we build the job around it.
Will a poisoned rat die in my wall and smell?
It can happen, and any operator who tells you it never does is not being straight with you. It is one of the reasons we lean on trapping and proofing rather than bait alone inside a living area. If something does die somewhere inaccessible we come back and deal with it, and we treat the odour and the flies rather than leaving you to it. See dead animal removal for what that involves.
Why do they keep coming back?
Because the hole is still there. Baiting without proofing is a subscription: you clear the current population and the next one walks in through the same gap six weeks later. A mouse fits through a gap the width of a pencil and a rat through one the size of a fifty cent piece. Weep holes, roof to gutter gaps, subfloor vents, pipe penetrations, garage door seals and eave gaps are where we spend the time.
Do you do commercial rodent work?
Yes. Food premises, warehouses, strata common property and offices, on a scheduled program with mapped bait stations, monitoring records and a treatment report for every visit. That documentation is what your auditor asks for, and it is the difference between a short conversation and a real problem at inspection time.
